Sam's Bio
Sam will be taking over from Tim in April this year. Sam has worked as a consultant in intensive care and acute medicine in Plymouth since 2007. He has been clinical lead for acute medicine and, since 2013, Clinical Director of the intensive care unit at University Hospitals Plymouth. Sam has always had great interest in developing and delivering high quality services and developing and nurturing the workforce. He is very keen that the Network should work with all the units across the region and the other networks to share our solutions and best practice. Delivering intensive care to the highest standards is very challenging in the health economy at present and we need to be innovative and thoughtful about how we drive standards up further and develop important new initiatives in intensive care, especially around long term outcomes and rehabilitation of our patients. The best ideas come from the clinical staff working with patients and Sam is very keen to listen to these on his visits to the units and our regional meetings.
CloseNetwork Geography

My clinical interests include in-situ high fidelity simulation training, transfer of critically unwell patients and regional anaesthesia. I have been Trust Lead for medical simulation at RSFT since 2017. The Medisim centre is currently one of the busiest simulation centres in the region, delivering a range of regional and national courses as well as local in-house training. We have a reputation for innovation in clinical simulation training and have developed one of the first in-situ simulation labs within our busy Intensive Care Unit. We regularly have contributions accepted to international conferences including ASPiH and SESAM, and have been awarded grants from the TEL project at HEE for the development of several of our courses, including STricT (Simulation Tricky Trips: Transfer of the Critically Unwell Patient). I have been Transfer Lead for the KSS CCN since August 2020 when the post was created to develop a regional Adult Critical Care Transfer service in alignment with the National Model for ACC transfer services.
